QuickBooks Review UK 2026: Is It Right for Your Business?

Professional using modern business software on a computer for a QuickBooks review

QuickBooks Online is a broad cloud accounting platform with plans for sole traders, small businesses and larger teams. Its strengths are automation, a familiar accounting workflow and a plan range that scales as a business grows.

This review is based on current public product information checked on 29 September 2026. Prices and offers can change.

QuickBooks at a glance

QuickBooks currently offers Sole Trader Plus, Simple Start, Essentials, Plus and Advanced in the UK. Standard monthly prices run from £10 for Sole Trader Plus to £123 for Advanced, excluding VAT, before any new-customer discounts.

What QuickBooks does well

QuickBooks covers invoicing, bank feeds, receipt capture, mileage, VAT, reporting and accountant access. The higher plans increase user limits and add more advanced business features. Intuit is also pushing AI features through Intuit Intelligence, including transaction categorisation and instant financial insights on supported plans.

User limits

User limits are tied closely to the plan. Simple Start supports one user, Essentials three, Plus five and Advanced up to 25, with accountant access in addition. This makes the plan decision important if several people need to work in the accounts.

VAT and Making Tax Digital

QuickBooks is HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital and supports UK VAT workflows. For VAT-registered businesses, the most useful test is how quickly you can reconcile the bank, review VAT codes and inspect the VAT return before filing.

Payroll

Payroll is available as an optional add-on rather than being included in the headline accounting subscription. If you have employees, compare the combined accounting and payroll cost with competitors that bundle payroll into selected plans.

Where QuickBooks is weaker

The user limits on lower plans can become restrictive, and the total cost can rise once you add payroll or move to a higher tier. Some businesses may also prefer a simpler interface with fewer options if their bookkeeping needs are basic.

Who QuickBooks is best for

QuickBooks is well suited to businesses that want a mainstream cloud accounting product with strong automation, clear upgrade paths and the ability to support a larger team on higher plans. It is also a natural option if your accountant already works in QuickBooks.

Is QuickBooks worth it?

Yes for many businesses, but the right plan matters. A one-person business may be well served by a lower tier, while a growing company should model the cost of additional users, payroll and advanced reporting before committing.
