Xero Review UK 2026: Is It Worth It for Small Businesses?

Business statistics and charts representing Xero accounting software review

Xero is one of the best-known cloud accounting platforms in the UK. Its biggest strengths are collaboration, bank reconciliation, reporting and a broad ecosystem of integrations. The main question is whether those strengths justify the monthly price for your business.

This review is based on current public product information checked on 29 September 2026. Pricing and promotions can change.

Xero at a glance

Xero’s UK plans currently include Simple, Ignite, Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate. The main business plans range from £18 per month for Ignite to £70 for Ultimate, excluding VAT, before promotional discounts.

What Xero does well

Xero handles the core accounting workflow well: invoices and quotes, bank reconciliation, bills, VAT returns, financial reports and document capture. Higher plans add stronger cash-flow forecasting, expenses, multi-currency, projects and performance analytics.

Unlimited users

A major advantage is that Xero does not charge a separate licence fee for every standard user on its core plans. That makes it attractive for businesses where several directors, staff members and an external accountant need access.

VAT and Making Tax Digital

Xero supports VAT returns to HMRC and Making Tax Digital workflows. For a VAT-registered business, the value comes from keeping invoices, bank transactions and tax coding in the same system so the VAT return can be reviewed before submission.

Payroll

Payroll is now more integrated into Xero’s UK plans. Grow includes payroll for one person, Comprehensive for five and Ultimate for ten, while lower plans use separate pricing. Check the current allowance if payroll is important to your decision.

Where Xero is weaker

The entry-level plans have limits that may feel restrictive. Ignite limits invoices and bills, while some useful features such as multi-currency, advanced analytics and larger payroll allowances sit on more expensive tiers. Businesses with very simple needs may find cheaper software sufficient.

Who Xero is best for

Xero is a strong fit for small and growing businesses that collaborate with an accountant, want several people to access the books, or rely on third-party apps. It is also well suited to businesses that want to scale from basic bookkeeping into forecasting and management reporting without changing platform.

Is Xero worth it?

For a business that uses its collaboration, bank feeds, reporting and integrations, Xero can justify its price. For a sole trader with only a handful of transactions, a cheaper or more specialised product may offer better value. Use a trial to test your real workflow rather than choosing on brand recognition alone.
