Quick verdict
QuickBooks is a strong choice if you value automation, Intuit’s AI features and a familiar cloud-accounting workflow. Sage is attractive if payroll is important, you want a broader product ecosystem or you need features such as inventory and multi-currency on higher plans.
Pricing
QuickBooks currently lists Sole Trader Plus at £10 per month, Simple Start at £16, Essentials at £38, Plus at £56 and Advanced at £123, excluding VAT. Sage currently lists Accounting Start at £20, Standard at £43 and Plus at £59, excluding VAT, alongside cheaper sole-trader plans.
Users
QuickBooks increases the user allowance as you move through the plans: one on Simple Start, three on Essentials, five on Plus and up to 25 on Advanced, with accountant access in addition. Sage user allowances depend on the plan, with Sage Accounting Plus currently advertised with unlimited users.
Payroll
Sage currently includes payroll with its three main Accounting plans. QuickBooks offers payroll separately, so a business with employees should compare the combined monthly cost rather than looking only at the accounting subscription.
Automation and AI
QuickBooks places Intuit Intelligence at the centre of its newer plans, including transaction categorisation, instant insights and delegated tasks on supported tiers. Sage promotes Sage Copilot for reducing admin, helping with invoices and surfacing unusual payroll activity. In practice, test whether the automation actually matches your bookkeeping process before paying for a higher tier.
VAT and reporting
Both platforms support UK VAT and Making Tax Digital workflows. QuickBooks offers increasingly advanced reporting as you move up its plans. Sage Standard and Plus add more forecasting, reporting, CIS, inventory and multi-currency capabilities.
Which should you choose?
Choose QuickBooks if you prefer its interface, want strong automation and need a clearly tiered route to more users. Choose Sage if payroll is central to your business or if Sage’s higher-plan features align closely with your operations.
